Leeds Salon

Our friend Paul Thomas from Leeds Salon has written an excellent article on The Culture Vulture detailing the healthy debating scene in Leeds.

‘Leeds does seem to be buzzing with debating, parlour and salon groups these days, are we entering a golden era intellectually?’ … this could be part of the much sought after ‘unique identity for Leeds.’

You can read it here, and be sure to visit Leeds Salon!

Hello world!

Hello there! Welcome to the shiny new Leeds Liberty blog.

We’ve been resurrected for another year, with the new committee consisting of Michaela Martin and Joseph Finlayson as Co-Presidents, and the sprightly James Wood as Treasurer. They have taken over from the more than able Gayan Samrasinghe, Mandy Carson, Elliot Hollier and Sean Mchale who are graduating. We wish them well in their future endeavours and hope to carry on the stellar work they did in organising incisive speaker events and making the society highly regarded in affairs of freedom of speech on campus.

Broadly speaking, our aims for the next academic year are:

  • to expand the society into a large and active group of students interested in civil liberties and human rights
  • to hold regular, well-attended speaker events with highly regarded academics, lawyers and activists
  • to create online and offline resources for students to defend civil liberties and to promote human rights

You can hear about upcoming events through our Facebook page and Facebook group. I hope to see you there!
